After breakfast, your guide drives you ten minutes to the cooking class. You begin in the garden, picking vegetables with your own hands. The class opens with grinding spices – the smell alone tells you something about this island. You cook, you eat what you made, you understand Lombok differently.

Into the Blue
Check out this morning. Your coach takes you to Teluk Nare Harbour on Lombok’s northwest coast, where a boat is waiting. The Gili Islands appear on the horizon – three small islands, no motorised vehicles, no noise except the sea.

• Snorkelling at Turtle Point: Green sea turtles moving through water so clear it looks unreal. The human statue below you, already colonised by coral. Blue reef stretching in every direction. You surface, descend, surface again. Hours pass without noticing. All gear, life jackets, boat and crew included.
• Beach Lunch: Fresh, halal and unhurried, somewhere between the coral and the sand.
• Gili Trawangan Arrival: Check in at your boutique beachfront resort. The evening is yours – hire a bicycle, sit on the sand, watch the fishing boats return.

Deep Green and High Air

A private speedboat carries you back to Teluk Nare, where your driver is waiting. The road north takes you toward Senaru Village near Bayan – the beginning of real Lombok.

• Sendang Gile & Tiu Kelep Waterfalls: A gentle two-hour jungle walk through rice paddies and irrigation canals, jungle pressing in from both sides. The reward: standing in the mist of a waterfall, swimming in water that has come down directly from Rinjani’s slopes. Wear light clothing and comfortable shoes.

• Scenic Drive to Sembalun Highlands: The three-hour transfer is one of the most quietly spectacular drives in Indonesia – cool air, terraced fields, the bulk of Rinjani growing larger with every kilometre.

• Check-in: Your Mountain Villa, Sembalun: Uninterrupted volcano views from the terrace. Dinner at the villa. Sleep early – tomorrow begins at 3:30 am.

Before the Light Comes
3:30 am. The stars over Sembalun are extraordinary when there are no city lights to wash them out. Your experienced mountain guide is ready.

• Mount Rinjani Sunrise Soft Trek: Three hours at a moderate pace – challenging enough to feel earned, accessible enough for most fitness levels. Headtorch on, Rinjani’s silhouette ahead. You arrive as the sky begins to shift. The sunrise over Lombok from 3,726 metres is not something that photographs fully. The island spreads below you. The sea catches the first light.
• Breakfast at the Villa: After the descent, the highlands show you their other face.
• Flower Gardens & Terraced Rice Fields: In bloom, dropping down the hillsides in layers of green.
• Coffee Plantation: See arabica and robusta processed and taste both. Lunch at a mountain restaurant.

The Living Tradition

After breakfast and checkout, the scenic three-hour drive back toward Mataram becomes a journey through Lombok’s cultural heart.

First stop is Sukarara – a traditional weaving village where Sasak women still produce handwoven cloth using techniques passed down for generations. The looms are wooden, the patterns are complex, and the patience required is remarkable. You can try it yourself. You will gain immediate respect for every piece of cloth you see.

The Traditional Sasak Village in Ende is different. You walk between traditional houses built as they have always been built. An elder tells stories of the community’s history – through a guide’s translation, but the meaning crosses language without difficulty. A traditional Sasak dance performance follows, and you are welcome to join.

Lunch at a local halal restaurant. By 3pm, you check in at Golden Palace Hotel in Mataram. The evening is free. Dinner at the hotel. The last night of the journey, and somehow it feels both too soon and complete.
